At KIPP SoCal Public Schools, we are committed to offering expanded opportunities to our students, families, and communities by supporting them outside the schools' traditional academic focus.
An example of this commitment in action was our recent partnership with OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, the leading global vision care foundation, and Sunglass Hut to host vision clinics at KIPP Promesa Prep and KIPP Endeavor College Prep in late October.
From October 23 to 27, more than 700 students, families, and community members from KIPP Promesa Prep and KIPP Endeavor College Prep participated in the clinics to receive extensive eye exams, prescription glasses (if needed), and sunglasses at no cost.
Participants who needed prescription glasses could choose from various quality frames and walk away with their newly prescribed eyewear the same day—one of the most memorable moments from the clinic occurred on the first day when the team welcomed a 60-year-old community member who had never received an eye exam before and was grateful for the opportunity to check on his vision health.
“We’re grateful to have partners like the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and Sunglass Hut, who are genuinely passionate and committed to ensuring our school communities thrive. Seeing our students, families, and community members proudly wear their new glasses reminded us why partnerships like these are important for closing equity gaps, like vision care access, in our school communities,” said Elva Layme Palencia, KIPP Promesa Prep Business Operations Manager.
1 in 4 students has an undiagnosed vision issue in the United States. To overcome this, the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation frequently partners with Sunglass Hut to host charitable vision clinics serving under-resourced communities in the United States. Over the last decade, Sunglass Hut has also proudly helped raise $27 million for the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation through customer donations.
