At KIPP Comienza Community Prep, the lower school Folklórico program is more than just a dance program—it’s a celebration of cultural identity, leadership, and community engagement.
Led by Performing Arts Department Head Christopher Sandoval, the program immerses students in the rich traditions of Mexican folkloric dance while instilling values that extend far beyond the stage.
“Our goal with the afterschool program is to focus on community-engaged education," says Sandoval. "Besides learning about identity and cultural traditions behind these social practices that we call folklórico, we also really focus on getting these kids and families out into these communal events that celebrate a bigger picture of what we do, as opposed to just being in the classroom."
Sandoval aims to inspire students to connect with their heritage and actively engage in the world around them. By participating in community performances and cultural events throughout the year, KIPP Comienza students step into roles as cultural ambassadors, gaining pride in their roots and learning essential leadership skills along the way.
“When we think about community engagement, we just really want our children to feel—besides a dancer and a KIPPster—that they need to uphold values as a cultural ambassador, a school ambassador, and leader," Sandoval explains.
KIPP Comienza’s Folklórico program is a shining example of how KIPP SoCal schools celebrate diversity and cultural richness throughout the year by cultivating pride in their heritage and emphasizing leadership.
