What's new at school this year

KIPP Sol's permanent canopy covering the soccer field, new artificial turf, and two new bungalows

Summer is far from over, but the summer break has come to an end for students in L.A. Unified students and other school systems. Here's a look at some of the new programs and facilities that await Eastside students returning to campus this week:   

Academics

Alliance College-Ready Middle Academy 8 | East LA

  • Using dollars from Proposition 28, Arts and Music in Schools Funding, students in the school’s music course can access new instruments, including trombones and drums.
  • Also, the Academy is recommitting to focus on social-emotional learning work using it weekly Compass Circle program.

Alliance Morgan McKinzie High School | East L.A.  

  • With the help of a Community Schools grant, the school has hired a community schools coordinator who will support relationship-building with community partners and help students and their families access resources that support their well-being.

Alliance Tennenbaum Family Technology High School | Glassell Park 

  • The school has expanded its Advanced Placement class options to include Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, Government, and United States History.

Ednovate Encore Arts & Media College Prep | East L.A.

  • Ednovate will open the eighth in its Southern California charter school network, which will be the third Ednovate school on the Eastside.
  • The school will open Aug. 5 with ninth grade and add a grade level every year.
  • Encore will offer three career pathways: Music performance, digital media and film/cinematography/acting/animation 

KIPP Academy of Innovation | East LA

  • The school will begin using Fish Tank English Language Arts for grades 5-8. Through the program, students develop the skills necessary to be critical readers, writers, and thinkers while gaining broader perspectives to better understand themselves and their world.

KIPP Iluminar Academy | East L.A.

  • The school will launch Eureka Math² for grades K-4 this school year. The program is designed to advance equity in the math classroom by helping students build enduring math knowledge.

Facilities

Alliance Morgan Mckinzie High School | East L.A.  

  • New gym machines and equipment for after-school programs.

Belvedere Middle School | East L.A.

  • Going through the second phase of construction and is expected to be completed by winter 2024. When work is done, the school’s historic auditorium will be fully renovated, the campus will have a new performing arts space and additional classrooms.

Ivanhoe Elementary School | Silver Lake

  • In the midst of a $70 million construction project. A new two-story building is being constructed that will house 15 permanent classrooms. Construction is expected to be done by the third quarter of 2026.  

Lincoln High School | Lincoln Heights

  • New natural grass field. 

Roosevelt High School | Boyle Heights

  • The school’s football field is anticipated to be completed in the second quarter of 2025. Construction on the football field began in the first quarter of 2024.
  • Work on the school’s baseball/softball field is expected to begin the first quarter of 2025. It’s anticipated construction will be completed by the first quarter of 2026.

KIPP Iluminar Academy | East L.A. 

  • New permanent canopy covering the play area. 

KIPP Innovation Academy | East L.A.

  • New permanent canopy covering the artificial turf play area. 

KIPP L.A. Prep | East L.A.

  • Expanded the capacity of student restroom facilities.

KIPP Promesa Prep | Boyle Heights

  • Replaced the play structure and installed artificial turf in the play area. 

KIPP Sol Academy | East L.A.

  • New permanent canopy covering the soccer field, new artificial turf on the soccer field, and two new bungalows

KIPP SoCal | East L.A. & Boyle Heights

  • Interior and exterior paint was freshened up, and new water fountains were installed in the multi-purpose rooms.
