Resources for Educators: Empowering Classrooms with Women's History

By Dr. Queenie Johnson, KIPP SoCal Director of Equity

Women’s History Month is an opportunity for us to honor the trailblazing women who have shaped generations through education, mentorship, and leadership.

The 2025 theme, Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations invites educators to spotlight the dynamic contributions of women—both past and present—that continue to inspire us every day.

A Celebration of Women

Women's History Month began as a single week in 1978 when the Education Task Force of Sonoma County, California, organized to address the absence of women's stories in K-12 education. Their "Women's History Week" initiative sparked a national movement, leading Congress to officially designate March as Women's History Month in 1987.

Today, we celebrate not just to honor achievements but to make visible the often-hidden contributions of women across cultures and communities. This visibility matters – it shows our students, especially young women, that their potential is limitless and their dreams are valid.
